MONTEREY PARK – East Los Angeles College tipped off the 2014-15 men’s basketball season by winning the College of the Canyons Tournament.
The Huskies defeated host Canyons, 76-67, Saturday in the championship game and won the tournament for the first time in seven consecutive appearances. They opened the four-team tournament by beating Oxnard, 92-70.

GARDENA – The Mark Keppel High girls’ basketball team was completely outgunned on Saturday night and lost to host Serra High, 71-37, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP BASKETBALL: Keppel Girls Overwhelm Santa Fe, 69-15

MONTEREY PARK - Mark Keppel's girls basketball team put forth their high pressure, fast paced game Wednesday (2/20/13) easily defeating Santa Fe High, 69-15, in the second round of  Section Division 2AA playoffs.

The lady Aztecs took control of the game immediately in the first quarter jumping to a 30-4 lead. After that it was all more of the same.

Top scorers were LMU-bound Alyson Lock with 23 points, Samantha Lee, 15 on five 3-pointers, and Lauren Saiki, 10 points.

Mark Keppel will now advance to the quarter finals against either Thousand Oaks or Camarillo on Saturday.

MONTEREY PARK - Mark Keppel boys basketball team was knocked out of the Division 2AA playoffs Wednesday (Feb. 19) despite a herioc effort by Spenser Briglio.

Villa Park Spartans defeated the Aztecs 68-63.

Brigllio had a game-high 27 points and srored seven 3-pointers for Keppel. Overall Keppel made 12-3 pointers. Aztec Bailey Kikuchi, a sophmore, scored 16 points.

In other boys basketball action, Cantwell-SHM defeated St. Anthony, 62-58 in Division 4A playoffs.

MONTEREY PARK – Spencer Briglio scored 19 points to help Mark Keppel Aztecs defeat Santa Ana, 73-46, and move on to the next level of high school basketball playoffs.

Keppel will go to Villa Park High School Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. for their next play off game.
Also scoring on Friday night (Feb. 15) were Bert Mak, 12 points, Kyler Lee, 10 points, Bailey Kikuchi, 9 points. Kikuchi also had 8 assists.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP BASKETBALL: Rosemead High Girls Begin Playoffs Thursday

ROSEMEAD -- Rosemead High School varsity girls basketball team will begin post season playoffs Thursday (Feb. 14) after defeating El Monte 56-36 on Feb. 8, for its record 46th straight Mission Valley League victory.

Rosemead will host Nogales High School in the CIF Southern Section 3AAA playoffs Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Panthers gym.

Rosemead won its fifth straight MVL Championship and 10th in the past 12 years with Jay Gauthier Sr. as head coach.

The CIF-SS 3AAA 10th-ranked host Panthers improved their MVL record to 10-0 and overall record to 19-6. Visiting El Monte finished second in the league with an 8-2 record and has a 15-11 overall record.
