ROSEMEAD, February 4, 2012 - Former Rosemead City Councilman John Tran has agreed to plead guilty to accepting $10,000 in bribes from a developer, according to a story in today's Los Angeles Times.

Tran, who is currently an El Monte Union High School District Board member faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 when he is sentenced, according to press reports.

The Los Angeles Times story and San Gabriel Valley Tribune attributed the news report to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Akrotirianakis. He reported said that Tran agreed to plead guilty after learning he could also face federal charges of extortion and obstruction of justice.

According to news reports, the bribery attempts began in 2005 after the unnamed developer visited Rosemead City Hall to obtain permits for an office building he was planning.

Over a two year period, the developer, according to reports, made a series of payments to Tran totaling $8,000.
Tran is currently a candidate for the 49th District State Assembly seat and is expected to withdraw.
