Rosemead -- The State Historic Resource Commission meeting in Chico approved designation of the Savannah Cemetery in Rosemead as a State Historical Landmark.

The Savannagh Cemetery, located at th east end of Rosemead on Mission Drive and Valley Boulevard, was established in about 1850 and is considered the "historic cemetery of the pioneer settlers who founded El Monte."

According to Joanne Russell Chavez, head of the delegatioin from the cemetery Association to the Rosemead City Council, there are only about ten cemeteries in the state designated as historical landmarks.

According to the Southern Callifornia Genealogical Solciety, Savannah "is very likely the first Protestant cemetary in Los Angeles County. It is essentially the last remaining evidence of El Monte's rich pioneer legacy as the End of the Santa Fe Trail and those to lived to make it there."

Although significant in the history of El Monte, Savannah Cemetary is actually located within the city limits of Rosemead.
