Funeral services are planned today, Tuesday, Feb. 9, for Abel Castellanos, a Monterey Park crossing guard who was killed when struck by a car. Services will be held at 5 p.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road in Whittier.
Castellanos was struck by a car on Jan. 27 as he sat in a folding chair at at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Elmgate Street. He had served as a crossing guard for nearly ten years. His death is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.Both Castellanos, 76, and Jin Yang, 19 were from Monterey Park.
Castellanos is survived by his children, Ted, Lorraine and Ronnie, along with their spouses Cesar Prietto and Deborah Castellanos. He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores, who passed away last year from cancer. Other survivors include grandchildren, Nichole, Ernie, Lina, Jacquline, Michelle, Ross, Julieanna, Andrea and Philip; and great-grandchildren, Ernie, Chrishelle, Christopher and Leila. Her also had two brothers Daniel, David and sister Dora along with many extended family members.
