Lam Takes Oath as Monterey Park Mayor

First term councilmember Stephen Lam got his first chance to run the city when he was automatically installed a Mayor of Monterey Park before a standing-only crowd of more than 300 people on Thursday night, Feb. 28.

His colleague Peter Chan was installed as his back-up or Mayor Pro-tem, Chan has previoiusly served as Mayor. 

More than 300 supporters of Lam and Chan attended the event which fetured presentations by community organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce. Lam once served on the Chamber Board. Becasue the Council Chamber was at it slimits, television monitors were set up in the city hall lobby with chairs for another 100 visitors.

Lam succeeds Council woman Teresa Real Sebastian who was mayor for most of the 2017. The council members automaticaly rotate through the Mayor's job and handle ceremonial duties for nine months and two weeks. Besides chairing the council meetings, a strong influential mayor can sometimes impact city policies and plans.

Lam owns a retail business in Monterey Park andis involeved in real estate investments. .
