Former MPk Mayor target of lawsuit

  • By David Barron

Former Monterey Park Mayor Mitchell Eng is the target of a lawsuit that alleges that he used his position to influence a police investigation into an accident four years ago when a woman was hit by his SUV. Ing would not comment on the pending lawsuit except to say “jay walking” because the legal proceedings are ongoing.

According to news reports, the initial lawsuit filed in June 2015. Ing struck Li Fang Yu with his Honda Pilot at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Garvey Avenue on Oct. 13, 2013.
The lawsuit alleges that she was walking within a crosswalk when struck. The attorney for Yu “filed a motion for punitive damages Thursday, alleging that Ing used his position as a city councilman to influence the police investigation which ultimately led Detective Vincent Vasquez recommending that Yu be charged with entering the intersection into the path of a vehicle,” the Pasadena Star News said in a front page article.
Subsequently, in a deposition, Detective Vasquez reversed his position and Yu was never charged.
According to news reports, Ing translated for the party during the post accident interviews.
A hearing will be held in Los Angeles Superior Court on March 13 on the motion by Yu’s attorney that Ing abused his power by translating for the other party.

Ing is currently a city councilman
