The Golden State Water Company has been ordered to refund thousands of customers throughout Rosemead, Monterey Park, El Monte and other areas because customer were overcharged. The California Public Utilities Commissioon said Golden State Water must refund customers in Northern and Southern California $9.5 million over the next two years. The company's shareholders must pay a $1 million fine to the state.
According to the Public Utilities Commisson water compaqny failed to inform regulatorsof internal control failures that wound up costing customers in their water rates. CPUC president Michael Peevey the allegation was that Golden State Water " did not exerrcise reasonalbe management oversight and failed to apply adequate internal controlsover its procurement for plqant improvements." Most of the $9.5 million fine will go towards customers in Northern California, where the majority are located. About $400,000 will be divided up among their 100,000 Southern California Customers. In the San Gabriel Valley, the Goldent State Water Company serves part of the cities of San Gabriel, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead and Temple City. The refunds will be credited to customers on their water bills, the CPUC said.
